YOUR TOWNSHIP AT A GLANCE

Approximately 30 minutes south-east of Ottawa, near highway 417, the Township of Russell is well positioned to take advantage of all the resources the National Capital Region and the Montreal region (a 90 minute drive) have to offer. Russell Township consists of 4 communities: Embrun, Russell, Limoges and Marionville. The majority of its population resides in both Russell (approx. 5000 residents) and Embrun (approx. 8000 residents) villages. One of the most interesting characteristic of the Township is probably the fact that bilingualism coexists ever since the arrival of the first settlers in the first half of the 19th Century.


Tourism

Dynamic and friendly the township residents are renowned for their community involvement and avid participation in cultural and sporting activities. Year round, agricultural activities and a variety of festivals and events are organized. The Russell Fair has been a popular annual agricultural fair for over 150 years. During summer, the 7.2 km paved bicycle trail, which connects both villages, Embrun and Russell, the New York Central railway, is a sure to please cyclists and pedestrians. La Maison des Arts, a cultural centre, where renown artists perform for the great pleasure of the entertainment lovers.

2010 was a defining year in the tourism industry for the Eastern region of the Prescott and Russell. In June of 2010, the largest water park in Canada [by Val Cartier] has openned its doors in Limoges, right across the 417 highway, neighbor to Embrun village. Over 30 000 tourists from everywhere are expected to stop every day for the summer season. Camp ground, hotels and restaurant chains are to be erected in the upcoming year.


Interesting Facts

The Township display 19th century architecture; for example, the St-Jacques Catholic Church in the Embrun village as well the Warner Building in Russell village, once a general store who currently is home to the Russell Public Library.
The economy is based mainly on agricultural activities. It is one of the major distributors of dairy and bovine products in the region, as well as sheep, corn and much more. The Township of Russell is ranked first in Eastern Ontario for its milk production. This is a great indicator of the success of this specific industry in our region.In 1981 Embrun Village was twinned with the town of Embrun, which is located in the French Hautes-Alpes. Embrun is also home to Veronic Dicaire a young rising star in the entertainment industry.
