You may detect coloured water during the use of a fire hydrant in your area. We recommend that you not drink or wash laundry with coloured water. While it is not harmful to your health, it can stain laundry. If you detect coloured water, turn on one cold water tap for a few minutes to flush the system as this is only temporary due to sedimentation in the watermain distribution system. Why is there an odour (sulphur / chlorine) in the water? The water you drink is required to be chlorinated as per the safe drinking water act. The slight odour of chlorine that is present indicates and assures that there is chorine available at all times for disinfection purposes. If you detect a sulphur odour in your water it is usually the result of a build-up of sulphur bacteria in your hot water tank. The cause of the odour is an oxygen deficient tank and temperature which allows the bacteria to become anaerobic and produce a gas. To prevent this problem flush or clean your hot water tank periodically. A plumber is recommended. | | |
