Clarifications on Waste Management
More
The Township of Russell would like to correct several errors recently published in a local newspaper regarding upcoming changes to our waste management system. It is important to us that residents have access to accurate and up-to-date information.
Here are the corrected facts:
- Waste collection will indeed switch to an automated system using black bins starting in November 2025, but it will remain weekly, not bi-weekly as stated by them. The frequency will be re-evaluated after one full year of organic waste collection.
- Each household has already received a 120-litre green bin, as organic waste collection began on April 7, 2025.
- A 120-litre black bin will be delivered to each household before the start of the collection in November 2025. There will be no 240-litre black bin option.
- A one-time $23 fee will be added to the August tax bill of current residents to cover the remaining cost of the black bins (the rest being funded by the remaining $300,000 in the organic waste collection budget).
- For new residents, a one-time fee of $125 will be charged for the purchase of the black and green bin set.
- The weekly extra garbage tag will remain at $2 for 2025, not $25 as stated by them, and there is no fee for the special large item pickup.
- Blue bins are provided by Waste Management, not the Township, and only to new residents. Broken bins are not replaced, and no additional bins are sold.
