Barracudas Swim Team

Barracudas logo

The Barracuda Swim Team is a fun, competitive swim team that strives to enhance the swimmers' sportmanship, endurance, strength and swimming ability. We hope the swimmers enjoy friendly competition during the swim meets and camaraderie during the summer months. From June 29 to August 21. Prices are for morning or evening sessions.

What is My Child's Barracudas Level?

Headstart

What is Headstart?

Headstart is our beginning level swim team. It is a terrific way for kids who love water to come together and learn about the sport of swimming. The swim team provides your little fish the opportunity to learn the basics of the four racing strokes:

  • Freestyle
  • Backstroke
  • Breaststroke
  • Butterfly

Our Headstart swimmers will also become race-ready by working on the dives, learning about relays, building endurance, and much more! Optional swim meets throughout the summer provide a fun and welcoming environment for our swimmers to try racing.

Is my swimmer ready for Headstart?

The approximate age range is 8 years old & under. Lifesaving Swimmer 2 is recommended. To ensure the safety of all swimmers, our Headstarts should not only love the water, but already:

  • Be comfortable putting their face in the water;
  • Jump into deep water unassisted;
  • Float and glide on front and back;
  • Swim 15 m in the pool unassisted.

Junior

What is Junior?

Junior is our mid-level swim team. At this level, swim team practices are centered on stroke development, endurance, and proper racing techniques for start and finishes. Swimmers will work to improve all four racing strokes. Relay races are our swimmers' favourite, since they provide a chance for friendly competition and team building. Junior swimmers are highly encouraged to participate in our optional swim meets throughout the summer.

Is my swimmer ready for the Junior Swim Team?

The approximate age range is 9-12 years old. To ensure that each swimmer feels both comfortable and challenged during practice, incoming swimmers should:

  • Swim basic freestyle and backstroke (some knowledge of breaststroke is an asset);
  • Complete a kneeling or standing dive;
  • Swim a minimum of 8-12 continuous laps (200-300 m).

Senior

What is Senior?

Senior is our most advanced level of swim team. Throughout the summer, our Senior swimmers work towards refining techniques for all four racing strokes, starts, turns and finishes. This level of swim team is highly focused on improving swimmers' endurance and overall fitness. Coaches will also help swimmers to set personal goals throughout the summer.

Is my swimmer ready for the Senior Swim Team?

The approximate age range is 12-15 years old. However, this team is open to swimmers who can:

  • Complete a proper standing dive or racing dive;
  • Swim freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke (some knowledge of butterfly is an asset);
  • Swim for 45 minutes with only a short rest between sets.

Challenger

This is a training program for athletes living with a physical and/or intellectual disability. Our program includes opportunities to learn swimming skills and opportunities to improve fitness levels in a safe and welcoming environment.

Barracudas Swim Team Registrations

Note: The Barracudas Swim Team is not a substitute for swimming lessons, but rather a program to introduce children to competitive swimming. Acceptance on the swim team is at the discretion of the coaches.

New Registration Process This Summer!

Swimmers will be asked to participate in a mandatory skills assessment on June 24 and 25. Participants will then be divided into the levels and assigned to specific practice times. To be able to participate in the skills assessment, swimmers still need to register on the registration system (on a first-come, first-serve basis). Swimmers will have to choose between the morning or the evening group.

Important Information

  • A $10 fee will be charged during registration. This fee will then be applied to the swim team registration fee, which will be due in full before July 3.
  • Time slots for the skills assessment will be emailed after June 8.
  • Please note that all swimmers participating in the mandatory skills assessment will be part of the team.
  • Morning and evening groups can accommodate 50 swimmers each.
  • It is important to put your name on the waiting list.
  • Lifesaving Swimmer 2 is recommended to join the swim team.
  • Challengers swim team is not included in this new process. Everyone is welcome!
