Position Overview

The Township of Russell is looking for motivated and enthusiastic individuals to serve and protect our community. Being a firefighter is very rewarding and the work is exciting and challenging. This role is responsible for responding to fire, medical, rescue, and hazardous materials emergencies.

The incumbent should be able to cope with a high level of stress and perform all duties efficiently in an emergency situation.

Qualifications and Requirements

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
  • Must be 18 years of age or older;
  • Reside preferably within the Township of Russell or in the surrounding areas; 
  • Physically fit and able to perform sustained and intense physical effort (selected candidates will be          required to provide a doctor’s medical certificate);
  • Hold a valid Ontario “G” class driver’s license;
  • Have access to a vehicle;
  • Have a valid and negative Criminal Record Check (< 6 months);
  • Provide a recent driver profile/abstract.

Compensation:

The salary is fixed between $24.34 and $25.87 per hour.

Building Official - 1 Year Contract

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Planning, Building and Economic Development Director and the Chief Building Official, the incumbent will be responsible for the review of building permit applications and plans, conduct required building inspections, maintenance inspections and issue orders all while ensuring compliance to the Ontario Building Code and other applicable laws.

The Building Official will ensure that buildings and related systems meet or exceed minimum standards for protection of the safety and welfare of the consumer, general public, owners and occupants.

Skills, Competencies and Knowledge

  • Possess a post-secondary education in building science (Engineering, Architecture, Building and/or Construction) field and/or combination of specialized training and experience.
  • Minimum of the general legal and the house qualifications with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing.
  • Working knowledge of the provincial acts and codes, building standards, municipal and zoning by-laws (required).
  • Able to work efficiently under time restraints as well as communicate in a professional manner
  • Valid class G driver’s license.
  • Valid and negative Criminal Record Check (< 6 months);
  • Able to maintain confidential information.

Language Requirements

Excellent proficiency French and English both oral and written.

Compensation

The salary, based on a 35 hours per week, is fixed between, $52,827 and $66,014 per year.

Possibility of permanent position with benefits and pension plan.

Cook at St-Jean/La Croisée Daycare (Part-Time)

Position Overview

The Cook will be under the supervision of the Daycare Manager and will be responsible for planning and developing balanced menus and snacks, preparing full meals, shopping, storing food and maintenance of the kitchen. He/She can replace child care staff on occasion.

Primary Activities

  • Prepare nutritious and well balanced daily meals for children, in accordance with planned menus
  • Make any necessary menu changes or substitutions to accommodate special needs and food allergies (anaphylactic)
  • Make sure that the kitchen and food storage are clean and properly arranged at all times
  • Assure the safety in the kitchen environment
  • Plan menus and determine size of food portions

Skills, Competencies and Knowledge

  • Secondary school diploma plus vocational training in meal preparation cooking paired with a minimum of one year of experience in a similar position (daycare, hospital, elderly residence);
  • Food Safety Training Attestation (mandatory);
  • Valid Driver's License;
  • Up-to-date First Aid certification (CPR Level C);
  • Up-to-date immunization record
  • Valid and Negative Criminal Record Check - Vulnerable Sector (within six months);
  • Job that requires a good physical fitness;
  • The incumbent must be organized, creative and able to work under pressure in a fast paced environment.

Work Schedule

30 hours per week, from 7am to 2pm, Monday to Friday

Language Requirements

Excellent proficiency in French (verbal and written). English is an asset.

Compensation

The salary is fixed between $15.05 and $16.98 per hour.

Public Works Equipment Operator - seasonal-(5 months contract)

Position Overview

Under the direction of the Public Works Supervisor, the incumbent will responsible for operating heavy equipment used in the snow removal and ice control operations on the municipal roads.

Primary Activities

The Operator will be responsible for performing the following duties but is not limited to:

  • Inspect and report on the condition of, traffic and directional signage and bridges, and drainage systems and lighting;
  • Operate heavy equipment to provide snow removal and ice control on all municipal roads and parking lots;
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance of vehicles and equipment;
  • Perform manual tasks related to maintenance and operations of roads.

Skills, Competencies, and Knowledge

  • Completion of secondary school education;
  • 3 years of experience in heavy equipment operations including loading, unloading and snow removal experience;
  • Must be able to work different work schedules and/or work irregular shifts as well be available 24/7 (On-call) during snow maintenance and removal period;
  • Must reside within a 30-minute range of the Municipal garage in order to respond to the minimum required response time during the winter snow maintenance and removal period;
  • Possess a DZ License to operate in tandem axle vehicles; an AZ license would be an asset;
  • Completion of apprenticeship program or industry courses in heavy equipment operating combined with on-the-job training ;
  • Certifications in Winter Patrol and/or any equivalent snow driving school, in road construction and/or road management would be considered an asset;
  • Clear criminal record (less than 6 months).

Language Requirements

Understanding of French and English, both in speaking and writing.

Compensation

The salary, based on a 40 hours per week is between $24.63/hour and $30.79/hour.

Under the supervision of the Director of Public Safety and Enforcement, this position is responsible for the safety of school children at assigned street crossings for designated hours each day the schools are in session.

Primary Activities

  • Direct and maintain discipline among children going to or returning from school in crossing streets in assigned areas during designated hours.
  • Provide gaps in traffic to permit the crossing of school children at designated crossings.
  • Report vehicles failing to obey traffic regulations at school crossings.
  • Report to proper authorities’ accidents involving school children or vehicles in the vicinity of the school crossing areas.
  • Perform other job-related duties as required.

Compensation

The compensation is fixed at $16 per crossing.
