Emergency Preparedness Week 2026
Emergency Preparedness Week takes place from May 3 to 9, 2026. This year’s theme is Prepared Together. The theme reminds us that we are safer when neighbours, community groups, municipalities and organizations work together to prepare for emergencies.
While we cannot prevent all emergencies, we can take steps to reduce risks and lessen their impact. Being prepared helps protect you, your family and our community.
Emergency Preparedness Week is a national campaign led by Public Safety Canada and emergency management partners across the country. It encourages residents to take simple, practical actions to be ready before an emergency happens.
How You Can Prepare
Being prepared does not have to be complicated. Start with these three steps:
- Know the risks in our community and region
- Make an emergency plan for your household
- Build an emergency kit with enough supplies to last at least 72 hours
During an emergency, you may be without power, water or services. Having a kit ready can make a big difference.
You can find helpful tools and checklists at www.getprepared.ca.
Using Technology During an Emergency
Phones and devices are important during emergencies, but service may be limited. Keep these tips in mind:
- Use text messages, email or social media when possible
- Keep phone calls short and only share important information
- Wait 10 seconds before redialing if a call does not connect
- Keep a phone charger in your emergency kit
- Save important contacts on your phone
- Reduce screen brightness and close unused apps to save battery
If you need emergency help, always call 9 1 1. Texting 9 1 1 is not available. For non-emergency issues, call 3 1 1.
Working Together in Emergencies
Emergency management in Canada is a shared responsibility. Local emergency services respond first. If more help is needed, they can request support from neighbouring municipalities, the Province or the federal government.
Everyone has a role to play. By preparing ahead of time, you help yourself and support the entire community.
Take time this week to get prepared. It is a small step that can make a big difference.
