From Mali to Embrun - Traoré Family Profile
As part of Black History Month, the Township of Russell invites you to discover the journey of the Traoré family. By settling in our Township, Fatoumata, Abdul Karim, and their children not only found a stable and welcoming environment but also discovered a community that warmly embraced them.
Fatoumata and Abdul Karim are originally from Mali, in West Africa. They immigrated to Canada in December 2024 with their three children, Bakary (11), Araba (9), and Alhassan (6). Since their arrival in Embrun, they have welcomed their fourth child, Ibrahim, now 7 months old. They chose to immigrate to Canada to provide a stable environment for their children and allow them to thrive.
When choosing where to live, they wanted to remain close to the nation’s capital, while also liking the idea of a quieter, family-friendly community. With a sister living in the region, she helped them discover the Township of Russell. They fell in love with the village of Embrun from their very first visit.
The family shares that the community’s welcome has been very warm, kind, and respectful. The children quickly made friends in the neighbourhood, and École élémentaire publique De la Rivière Castor welcomed the family wonderfully. The children love their school, and the family has integrated very well into the school community.
Community services all played an important role in their transition. The employment centre provided strong support to Abdul Karim to help him find work and begin a return to school. ServiceOntario was a great help with administrative procedures, and health services were also invaluable, particularly upon their arrival in Canada when Fatoumata was pregnant, helping them navigate the healthcare system. Having arrived during Ramadan, they are also grateful for the strong Muslim community that welcomed them, allowing them to share meaningful moments and make wonderful connections at the mosque.
The children take part in various activities in the region, including through Valoris and other community activities, which allow them to meet other friends and families. Among these, the Christmas illuminated parade was a particularly memorable moment for the children. The family also enjoys the many natural spaces in the Township, such as parks, for walks and picnics.
“For any family looking for a good living environment for their children, for peace and tranquility, this is the right place! So many small things have touched us since our arrival, like receiving a bicycle from a neighbour for one of our children. These are gestures that truly left a mark on us because of people’s kindness. People are caring,” shares Fatoumata.
Today, Fatoumata has also begun a new chapter by returning to school in Social Work Techniques. Through this path, she hopes to become actively involved in community life and help support other families in their integration journey.
The Traoré family perfectly illustrates the richness and diversity that strengthen our Township. Their journey shows how a warm welcome, local services, and an engaged community can facilitate integration and well-being for new residents. Through their story, we celebrate not only Black History Month, but also the spirit of solidarity and respect that defines Embrun and the entire Township of Russell.
