Henry Staal Receive Community Award
At last night’s Council Meeting, the Township of Russell proudly recognized longtime resident and dedicated volunteer Henry Staal with a Community Award. This honour celebrates individuals who make exceptional contributions to our community, and Henry’s decades of commitment to preserving and promoting local heritage make him a truly deserving recipient.
Henry grew up on a family farm near Hamilton Road in the early 1950s and has spent much of his life-giving back to the community he calls home. Over more than 40 years of involvement with the Russell Agricultural Society and the Russell Fair Board, Henry played key leadership roles, including serving as President from 1998 to 1999 and again in 2016. His steady guidance and volunteer spirit helped strengthen one of the Township’s most cherished community traditions.
In 2000, Henry joined the Russell Lions Club, where he chaired many committees and led two “DocFest” fundraising events that supported the Winchester Hospital. He also served a term as Club President, continuing his long-standing commitment to community service.
Henry has also been an active member of the Russell Historical Society, serving as President for three years. During this time, he helped restore the old Russell Fire Hall and brought local residents together to refurbish Russell’s first-ever fire truck. This historic truck now proudly appears in parades across the region, and Henry’s efforts are commemorated in a mural on the restored fire hall near Concession and Church Street.
In 2010, Henry founded Vintage Iron and Traditions Eastern Ontario, an antique collectors group dedicated to preserving and sharing the region’s agricultural and pioneer history. With more than 200 members today, the group organizes historical exhibits, displays, and demonstrations that help residents, especially newcomers and children, connect with the Township’s past. Henry’s passion and enthusiasm make these exhibits engaging and educational for visitors of all ages.
One memorable example of Henry’s impact was during the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Village of Russell’s incorporation. Standing proudly beside a detailed historical display he organized, Henry took the time to explain local artifacts to children and new residents, sharing his deep love of the Township’s heritage.
The Township of Russell is proud to honour Henry Staal for his remarkable dedication, leadership, and lifelong commitment to preserving our community’s history. His contributions have helped shape the Township’s identity and ensure that our shared heritage continues to inspire future generations.
