Indigenous Veterans Day - November 8
On November 8, we honour Indigenous Veterans Day—a time to recognize the strength, service, and sacrifices of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Veterans who defended Canada in times of war and peace.
Thousands of Indigenous men and women proudly served in uniform, while communities across the country supported the war efforts from home—raising funds, knitting clothing, and producing supplies. Yet, despite their dedication, many Indigenous Veterans faced inequity and exclusion when they returned home, denied the same benefits and recognition as their non-Indigenous comrades.
Many brought with them unique skills—patience, precision, and deep knowledge of the land—that made them exceptional scouts, sharpshooters, and code talkers. Soldiers like Charles “Checker” Tomkins of Alberta used Indigenous languages such as Cree to securely transmit military messages that enemies could not decipher.
Today, we pay tribute to their courage, resilience, and lasting legacy. Their contributions continue to shape Canada’s story of service and remembrance.
