Jack McLaren Received a Community Award
On Monday night’s Council meeting, Jack McLaren was recognized with a Community Award for his outstanding contributions to Russell Township.
A longtime and much-valued community volunteer, Jack has dedicated decades of service to the village of Russell, primarily through his work with the Russell Lions Club. Since joining the Club in 1964, Jack has embraced the Lions’ motto, “We Serve,” and has been a driving force behind countless community initiatives.
Jack’s contributions are wide-ranging and deeply impactful. He organized the largest softball tournament in Eastern Ontario, an annual event that ran for over a decade and attracted teams from across the province and even the northern United States. He has been instrumental in supporting local organizations, promoting events on the Lions advertising sign, and assisting groups such as the Russell Tennis Club, the Potpourri Music Fundraiser, and the Russell Youth and Sport Club.
Beyond event promotion, Jack has consistently shown personal dedication to the needs of residents. For decades, he has delivered donations to the local Food Bank, prepared Christmas baskets for families in need, and loaned essential medical equipment such as hospital beds, wheelchairs, and walkers—always with discretion and a ready smile. Even at 88 years young, Jack remains hands-on, often greeting residents and ensuring community resources are available when needed.
Julius Toth, past president of the Lions Club, praised Jack as a “community treasure” and highlighted his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. “Jack knows that as a volunteer, you not only have to give your time but also your heart,” he wrote, noting that Jack’s thousands of hours of service have touched countless lives in Russell Township.
Jack McLaren’s tireless commitment to community service, his leadership, and his generosity of spirit make him a true role model for residents of all ages. His dedication reminds us that one person’s efforts can make a profound difference—and that we are never too old to contribute meaningfully to our community.
