Latin American Heritage Month - October 2025
Celebrating Latin American Heritage Month: The Ramirez Lalonde Family
October marks Latin American Heritage Month in Canada — a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions, culture, and traditions of Latin American Canadians. For the Ramirez Lalonde family of Russell, this month holds a very special meaning.
“Our little mixed family merges Mexican and Canadian cultures,” shares the family. “We are very proud of the rich and vibrant culture that Mexico brings to our family.”
Paco Ramirez, originally from Mexico City, passes on an important part of his heritage to his children and the wider community through traditional prehispanic danza — a sacred dance used in ceremonies for centuries. Paco proudly dances with his two sons, while his wife, Jasmine Lalonde, accompanies them on the huehuetl, a traditional wooden drum covered with cowhide. Their daughter joins in with a smaller drum, making it a true family tradition that spans generations.
One of the family’s most cherished contributions to the community is the Día de los Muertos celebration — the Day of the Dead. This deeply meaningful event honours ancestors and loved ones who have passed, through colourful displays of flowers, ceremonial danza, and a beautifully decorated altar. This year, the Ramirez Lalonde family invites the community to join them on November 1, 2025, for a family-friendly Día de los Muertos celebration.

Beyond major celebrations, the family is deeply engaged in community life year-round. They host Spanish conversation groups, language classes, and Mexican fiestas, all with the goal of creating meaningful cultural connections.
Through their dedication and passion, the Ramirez Lalonde family exemplifies the spirit of Latin American Heritage Month: honouring tradition, celebrating diversity, and building bridges of understanding across cultures.
¡Viva la herencia latina! Together, let’s embrace the past, celebrate the present, and envision an inclusive future.
