Local Athlete Named to Team Canada
A Russell Township resident is set to represent Canada on the world stage. Zachary Jeggo has been named to Team Canada for the World Athletics Relays, taking place May 2-3, 2026, in Gaborone, Botswana. He is the youngest member selected to the national team.
This marks the first time Jeggo has been named to a Canadian national team. His selection comes during an exceptional first year at Simon Fraser University, where he competes in track and field.
“It was a big surprise,” Jeggo shared following the announcement from Athletics Canada. “A senior national team wasn’t something I expected this soon.”
Jeggo competes in the 400 metres and has quickly made a name for himself at the national level. Earlier this year, he set a new Canadian under-20 indoor record with a time of 46.72 seconds at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships. That result placed him among the top young athletes in the country in his event.
On the same day he was named to Team Canada, Jeggo was also recognized by Simon Fraser University as Male Freshman of the Year and Lorne Davies Male Athlete of the Year for an individual sport. He described the day as busy and surreal and credited his teammates and friends for supporting him along the way.
Representing Canada is something Jeggo says he has always worked toward.
At the World Relays, Jeggo will compete as part of a relay team, transitioning from individual races to a team-based event. He says the team aspect is one of the things he values most.
The World Athletics Relays are an important international competition and a key opportunity for athletes hoping to qualify for future world championships. The event will also help Jeggo build experience as he works toward a potential spot on Team Canada at the World Under-20 Championships later this summer.

As he prepares for his international debut, the community will be cheering him on while he represents both Canada and his hometown with pride!
