Our Vote, Our Future
Encouraging local youth to vote and increasing civic engagement.
The Russell Township Teen Advisory Committee is pleased to announce the launch of a project called Vote Pledge, in the lead up to the fall 2026 Municipal election. The pledge will engage residents, especially youth, to be informed and, if eligible, encourage them to exercise their right to vote.
According to the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, voter turnout in municipal elections has been in a steady decline across the province for several years. Russell Township is no exception. According to local election data results from Russell Township, roughly 1 in 5 eligible voters aged 18-19 cast their vote in the 2022 municipal election, and only 31.3% of all eligible voters participated.
“From my experience on this committee and speaking with friends I know that youth have a lot to say about our future. Our committee wants to ensure that all voices, including young voices, are heard and represented on a municipal, provincial, and federal level,” says Norah Kwok, member of the Teen Advisory Committee since 2024.
The Vote Pledge initiative is one of several that the committee is undertaking to expand civic engagement amongst young people this year. The committee will be rolling out several key activities to reach youth and inspire civic engagement including:
- Vote Pledge;
- Informational presentations and mock Council meetings in the classroom;
- Student voting simulations;
- Municipal Rep Day; and
- Mayor for a day experience at Town Hall.
Through education, encouragement, and engagement, we can inspire civic participation in local youth.
