Pink Shirt Day 2026
The Township of Russell is committed to building a welcoming and inclusive community where everyone can reach their full potential and live with respect, dignity, and freedom from discrimination.
What is Pink Shirt Day?
Pink Shirt Day is a national movement that encourages everyone to stand against bullying. On February 25, we invite you to wear pink as a symbol of solidarity and support. Participation is simple — wear a pink shirt, add a pink accessory, a touch of pink in your hair, or even a pink virtual background at school or work.
The Story Behind the Movement
In 2007, in Berwick, Nova Scotia, a student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Two Grade 12 students bought 50 pink shirts and encouraged classmates to wear them in support. The next day, most students arrived in pink, sparking a movement that has grown across Canada and internationally. Today, the last Wednesday of February is celebrated as national Pink Shirt Day.
Why It Matters
Pink Shirt Day raises awareness about bullying and promotes kindness, empathy, and inclusion. By participating, we reinforce the values that make our Township safe and welcoming — not just on Pink Shirt Day, but every day.
