Two Residents Receive Community Awards
At last night’s Council meeting, two exceptional individuals were recognized with Community Awards for their outstanding contributions to Russell Township.
Robert Potvin
Robert Potvin received the Community Award for Valor in recognition of his extraordinary bravery during a dangerous incident on May 8 in the St-Moritz area. When a resident was attacked and others were threatened by an individual armed with a knife, Mr. Potvin, a resident of the area, stepped in before law enforcement could arrive.
Demonstrating incredible calm and courage, he approached the armed individual and successfully de-escalated the situation through dialogue. Thanks to Mr. Potvin’s quick thinking and composed actions, the individual peacefully surrendered the weapon, preventing serious harm and potentially saving lives. His actions are a remarkable example of selflessness and bravery in service to the community.
Michelle Leduc
Michelle Leduc received the Community Award for Sports, Community Service and Volunteerism in recognition of her exceptional leadership and dedication to promoting physical activity and community spirit. Since 2014, Michelle has volunteered with the Russell Community Sport Club, assuming leadership of the Youth Running program for ages 10 to 14. Recognizing a greater need in the community, she introduced the Run, Jump, Throw program, an engaging and inclusive introduction to athletics for children ages 5 to 10.
As Race Director of the annual Russell Run since 2018, Michelle has helped grow the event to include participants of all ages and abilities. She also helped establish the Russell Run Club, expanding programming to adults and making running and walking more accessible for the entire community.
Over the past four years, Michelle has launched Learn to Run and Return to Run programs, organized weekly group runs and workouts, and led community events such as the Prescott-Russell Trail Relay and the Sunrise to Sunset Run. Her efforts have not only promoted healthy lifestyles but also strengthened partnerships with neighbouring run clubs across eastern Ontario.
Michelle’s vision and dedication continue to inspire others and have helped make Russell Township a more inclusive and active community.
