Want to Run in the Municipal Election 2026? Nominations Open May 1!
Starting May 1, 2026, residents may register as candidates for the offices of Mayor, Councillor, School Board Trustee, or Police Village of Russell Trustee in the upcoming Municipal Election 2026. Candidates have until August 21, 2026, by 2:00 p.m. to file or withdraw their nomination.
To file your nomination, you must make an appointment with the Clerk’s office at elections@russell.ca to file the following in person with the Municipal Clerk:
- A completed Nomination Form (Form 1).
- The nomination fee. For the purpose of clause 33 (2) (c) of the Municipal Act, the prescribed nomination filing fee is $100 except for the office of head of council of a municipality, in which case the filing fee is $200. O. Reg. 150/18, s. 1.
- A completed Endorsement of Nomination Form (Form 2).

The filing fee is payable by cash, certified cheque, money order or electronic payment if specified by the Clerk. Candidates will be required to provide proof of identity. Only forms with original signatures filed in person by the candidate or by an agent will be accepted. Nominations papers are to be accompanied by 25 endorsement signatures from eligible electors (Form 2).
The requirement to submit 25 signatures does not apply to candidates running for school board trustee positions or candidates running for Police Village of Russell trustee positions.
If there are an insufficient number of certified candidates to fill all positions available, nominations will be reopened (for the vacant position only) on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to be filed with the office of the Clerk.
The term of office is November 15, 2026, to November 14, 2030.
The Municipal Election 2026 is October 26, 2026. Voting by telephone and Internet begins on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. and continues until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 26, 2026 (Voting Day). Make sure you are registered to vote at RegisterToVoteON.ca!
