Prepared by: Jonathan Bourgon

Approved by: Council
Purpose
To ensure responsible management of trees on Township properties by promoting environmental sustainability, and biodiversity. This policy establishes a clear replacement ratio for any tree removal activities.
Responsabilities
This policy applies to all Township-owned or managed properties, including parks, facilities, road allowances, and leased spaces where landscaping is under Township responsibility.
Policy
Any tree removed from Township property must be replaced at a ratio of 1:3 — for every one tree cut, three new trees must be planted.
Procedure/Guideline
1. Tree Removal Criteria:
Trees may only be removed if:
- They pose a safety hazard.
- They are diseased or dying.
- They interfere with infrastructure or approved development plans.
2. Replacement Requirements:
- Replacement trees must be planted within the same calendar year as the removal. (After Oct 15, the replacement tree must be planted the following spring).
- Species selected should be native or climate-resilient, and suitable for the site.
- Replacement trees must be of a minimum size (e.g., 5-gallon container or 1-inch caliper).
- Locations for planting may include the original site or other approved areas on Township property.
3. Documentation & Reporting:
All tree removals and replacements must be documented.
An annual report will be available for information purposes detailling:
- Number of trees removed.
- Number and species of trees planted.
- Locations of new plantings.
4. Exceptions:
In cases where planting three trees is not feasible due to space or ecological constraints, alternative greening measures (e.g., shrubs, vertical gardens, donations to reforestation programs) may be considered.
