October 19 to 25, 2025, is Local Government Week in Ontario. This week happens every year in October to help people, especially youth, learn about the important role local governments play. The goal is to encourage civic participation and show the services, opportunities, and careers available in local government.

What Do Local Governments Do?

Municipalities are the level of government closest to residents. They provide many of the everyday services we use, like roads, water, and waste collection.

Why Get Involved in Your Local Government?

Local governments work hard to make communities run smoothly. When residents get involved, they help build stronger and more inclusive communities. By taking part, people can influence decisions and make sure all voices are heard.

Here are some reasons to get involved:

  • Different opinions help reflect the needs and values of the community.
  • Your feedback can shape policies that affect your daily life.
  • Participation makes decision-making more open and accountable.
  • Community involvement builds a sense of responsibility and citizenship.

Your voice matters—get involved today!

Ways You Can Get Involved

  • Attend public Council, committee, and town hall meetings
  • Apply to join a municipal board or advisory committee
  • Take part in public consultations
  • Vote in local elections
  • Talk with your elected officials
  • Consider running for office
  • Volunteer in community organizations
  • Help as a poll worker on election day
  • Subscribe to Township newsletters (www.russell.ca/subscribe)
  • Follow local news and updates
  • Answer local surveys and polls
  • Submit a petition to council
  • Speak up about local issues

Why Choose a Career in Local Government?

Local governments provide essential services, support arts and culture, and find solutions for future challenges. People who work in local government are problem-solvers and community builders.

A career in local government lets you:

  • Make a difference through meaningful work
  • Experience a workplace that grows and evolves every day.
  • Earn competitive pay and retirement savings
  • Build a career with many opportunities across Ontario
