The units have all been distributed and the pilot project in underway.

Russell Township is introducing another groundbreaking initiative—the FoodCycler Pilot Program. This innovative program aims to empower residents with a small kitchen appliance that facilitates in-home composting.

The FoodCycler is offered to residents through a pilot program featuring 250 units at a reduced cost. This presents an excellent opportunity for environmentally conscious residents who wish to kickstart their composting journey in 2024. Not only does this program contribute to reducing landfill waste, but it also aligns with the Township's broader goals for sustainable waste management.

This initiative seamlessly complements the upcoming 2025 organic collection, providing residents with a convenient and eco-friendly alternative. Those who participate in the FoodCycler Pilot Program will still have access to the organic collection service once it commences in 2025.

Info on FoodCycler

What is a FoodCycler?

The FoodCycler™ is a closed-loop indoor compost alternative that speeds up the natural decomposition process through aerobic digestion of waste. The unit dries and grinds food waste into a dry, odorless nutrient-rich by-product that is significantly reduced in weight and volume from its unprocessed state. The product is free from bacteria, weed seeds, and food-borne pathogens that were eliminated during the process.

Benefits of the FoodCycler™:

  • Up to 90% volume reduction
  • Quiet, compact, odourless operation
  • Easy to clean, easy to operate, no special training or skills required
  • Quick (compared to composting, the FoodCycler™ processes food waste in hours, instead of months)
  • Produces a valuable soil amendment, low in odour, and less attractive to wildlife.
  • Reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) impact vs. landfill.
